U. S. Department of Education Workshops

April 11, 2006 - Jacksonville, Florida

The U.S. Department of Education and the Florida Department of Education will conduct two free technical assistance workshops for organizations that are interested in working with children in their community. Information will also be given about No Child Left Behind and upcoming grant opportunities from the U.S. Department of Education.

21st Century Community Learning Centers
9:00am – 12:00pm (registration begins at 8:00am)

A 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant can be used to establish or expand community learning centers that provide students with academic enrichment; tutoring; youth development activities; drug and violence prevention programs; art, music and recreation programs; technology education programs; and character programs; and to provide families of students with opportunities for literacy and related educational development.

The application deadline in Florida is May 12, 2006. For more information, please visit www.firn.edu/doe/curriculum/21century.htm.

Supplemental Educational Services
1:30pm – 4:30pm (registration begins at 1:00pm)

Under No Child Left Behind Act, faith-based and community organizations, non-profit entities, for-profit entities, local education agencies, public schools, public charter schools, private schools, and public or private institutions of higher education are eligible to receive federal funds to provide extra academic help to students from low-income families who attend Title I schools that are in their second year of school improvement, corrective action or restructuring. These supplemental educational services (“SES”) are additional academic instruction designed to increase the academic achievement of students in low-performing schools. Services must be provided outside of the regular school day and may include academic assistance such as tutoring, remediation and other educational interventions.

In this workshop you will learn how your organization can become an approved SES provider in Florida and receive funds for tutoring eligible children in math and language arts.

To register for these free technical assistance workshops, please visit www.ed.gov/about/inits/list/fbci/regform.html.

Please register by April 9, 2006.

If you are unable to register online or have questions, please call (202) 219-1746.

21st Century Community Learning Centers 2006 Summer Institute

July 10-12, 2006

Town and Country Resort and Convention Center - San Diego, California

The U.S. Department of Education and the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, in conjunction with the National Partnership for Quality Afterschool Learning at SEDL, are pleased to announce that the 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) 2006 Summer Institute will be held July 10-12 in San Diego, CA.

This year's program is open to current State-funded 21st CCLC grantees, former grantees funded by the U.S. Department of Education that are still operating after-school programs, and other interested after-school providers, funders and policy-makers. For current grantees, we suggest that you have the project director and the site coordinators from your grant attend, though you have flexibility in deciding who should most appropriately attend the Summer Institute.
